Volunteer in Banton, Philippines – Live the Island Life

Are you passing through the Philippines? Looking for a way to slow down, reconnect with nature, and leave a positive mark? A one of a kind opportunity is waiting for volunteers on Banton Island, a peaceful and little-visited gem in Romblon Province, where the waves and the birdsong are your only background noise.

A local couple, JR and Bea, have made their home here, right by one of the island’s marine sanctuaries. Years ago, they left the hustle of city life to create a simpler, more meaningful existence, and now they open their doors to travellers who want to do the same. In gratitude for your help, they will share their enchanted corner of the world with you.

The volunteer experience here is a blend of hands-on contribution and deep relaxation. Mornings are dedicated to helping with restoration and creative projects. You could find yourself building a wooden fence, working on small construction projects, tending to the garden, or even sharing your cooking skills by teaching dessert or appetiser recipes. Afternoons and weekends are yours to explore. Swim in clear waters alongside sea turtles, discover quiet beaches with white sand, or hike mountain trails where lizards bask and monkeys leap through the trees.

Accommodation

Accommodation is provided in a simple, well-lit room with a fan, a comfortable bed, and a private bathroom. There’s even an outdoor bamboo shower in the garden, perfect after a swim.

Three home-cooked meals a day are included.

There are no bars, no banks, no tourist crowds, just space to breathe, to create, and to connect with the land and its people.

Volunteers are asked to stay for about three to four weeks to fully immerse in this experience. Skilled carpenters and masons are especially welcome between August and October. Gardeners are needed in July, which is also the island’s fruit season, an ideal time to pick and savour tropical fruits straight from the garden. Those with culinary experience are invited to come in November to share recipes and cooking knowledge with the community.

Banton is a small island with around 5,000 inhabitants. It’s about seven hours by ferry from Lucena City and roughly 150 kilometres from Manila. While there is no public transport on the island, motorcycle rental is possible, and the hosts can help arrange an airport pickup from Manila if needed.

More than just a volunteer placement, this is a chance to experience an entirely different rhythm of life, one rooted in nature, generosity, and simplicity. JR and Bea have also contributed to community projects such as creating a local museum and restoring historical buildings on the island, including the ancient Spanish fort.
