Entry and volunteering in Bulgaria

Bulgaria is a member of the European Union and has been a full member of the Schengen Area since 1 January 2025. Entry conditions depend on your nationality, length of stay and purpose of travel.

For travellers subject to Schengen short-stay rules, time spent in Bulgaria forms part of the general Schengen calculation. Visa-free entry or a short-stay visa should not, however, be assumed to authorise every type of volunteering, unpaid work or hospitality exchange.

Formal volunteering for non-EU nationals

Bulgarian law provides a specific residence route for certain third-country nationals participating in organised youth volunteering. The official immigration information still refers to this route using the historical term European Voluntary Service.

For this type of formal programme, the volunteer must have an agreement with a host organisation in Bulgaria. The agreement should describe the activity, location, duration, supervision, accommodation and subsistence arrangements, as well as any preparation required before the activity begins.

The residence permit is linked to the duration of the agreement and can be issued for up to one year.

European Solidarity Corps and older EVS listings

Some older Voluntouring listings in Bulgaria refer to the European Voluntary Service (EVS). EVS is a former European youth volunteering programme and has been replaced at European level by the European Solidarity Corps (ESC).

Older announcements may retain the original EVS terminology for archival purposes. Always contact the organisation to find out whether it currently participates in an ESC project or another programme and what current eligibility conditions apply.

Informal exchanges and commercial hosts

Many opportunities in this archive are independent work or hospitality exchanges rather than formal volunteering programmes. They may involve campsites, farms, hostels, private properties or other independent hosts.

Do not assume that the formal volunteer residence route described above automatically applies to these arrangements. Regular reception work, cleaning, hospitality duties, agricultural work or other activities performed for a commercial business may have different immigration or employment implications.

Accommodation and meals provided in exchange for help do not by themselves determine whether an activity is legally considered volunteering.

If the arrangement resembles regular employment, ask the host to clarify its legal basis and check the requirements that apply to your nationality and proposed activities.

Farm, animal and outdoor projects

Bulgaria listings on Voluntouring include farms, horse rescue projects, eco-campsites and other outdoor opportunities. Before joining one of these projects, ask what tasks you will perform and what training or supervision is provided.

Animal handling, agricultural machinery, construction, power tools, horse care and other practical activities may involve risks that are not covered by every standard travel insurance policy.

Make sure your insurance covers the activities you intend to undertake and do not operate unfamiliar equipment without appropriate instruction and supervision.

Before accepting an opportunity

Ask the host to confirm:

• the exact activities and weekly hours;
• days off and supervision arrangements;
• the identity and legal status of the host;
• accommodation and sleeping conditions;
• meals and other included expenses;
• any fees, deposits or contributions;
• insurance arrangements;
• whether previous experience is required for practical or animal-related work;
• which immigration or residence requirements apply to international participants.
