How to use this archive
- Open the announcement that interests you and check its publication or latest update date.
- Confirm the exact location, availability, duties, weekly hours, days off, required skills, supervision and minimum stay.
- Find the Contact Details section and contact the host through its official website, email address or application form.
- Request written confirmation of accommodation, meals, transport, costs and cancellation conditions before making travel arrangements.
Accommodation, meals and contributions
Some opportunities provide accommodation or meals in exchange for a reasonable amount of voluntary help. Others may request a contribution to cover housing, food, training, equipment, local transport or project expenses.
A contribution fee does not prove that a project is responsible or effective. Ask what the payment covers, who receives it, when it must be paid and whether receipts or a refund policy are available. Verify the organisation independently before sending money or personal documents.
Work exchanges and paid positions
Some listings involve hostels, resorts, restaurants, guesthouses or other income-generating activities. Responsibilities, weekly hours, days off and benefits should be stated clearly. Volunteers should not replace regular employees or cover essential commercial shifts without an appropriate contract.
Paid positions should clearly identify the employer, salary, working hours, contract conditions and accommodation deductions. Do not assume that a tourist visa permits employment, internships or unpaid work exchanges.
Teaching and volunteering with children
Voluntouring promotes opportunities for adults aged 18 and over. Projects involving schools, children or vulnerable people require appropriate screening, a written safeguarding policy, training, clear role boundaries and continuous supervision by qualified local staff.
Short-term visitors should support trained teachers rather than replace them. Avoid placements that offer immediate or unsupervised access to children, encourage emotional bonding as the main activity or use children’s personal stories and photographs primarily for marketing.
Read our guide to safer alternatives for volunteering with children.
Marine conservation and animal projects
Ask conservation organisations about permits, scientific objectives, data collection methods, professional supervision and how volunteer activities support long-term local work.
Marine projects should provide appropriate training, safe equipment, emergency procedures and qualified diving supervision. Volunteers should not handle wildlife, coral or protected species unless the activity is legally authorised and professionally supervised.
Current regional safety notice
Updated August 2026: official travel advice warns against non-essential travel near parts of the Thailand-Cambodia land border. Border crossings may be suspended, and some affected areas contain landmines or unexploded ordnance. Avoid restricted border areas and verify your route before travelling.
The security situation in Myanmar remains volatile, and official authorities advise against travel to many areas. Some governments advise against travelling to the country altogether. Do not rely only on information provided by a host.
Parts of Laos and other countries in the region may also contain unexploded ordnance. Remain on recognised routes, follow local guidance and check the exact project location against current official advice.

Visas, health and insurance
Visa requirements depend on your nationality, destination and activities. Even unpaid volunteering may require specific authorisation. Confirm the rules with official immigration authorities or the relevant embassy.
Consider travel and medical insurance that explicitly covers your destination, volunteering activities, diving or contact with animals where relevant, emergency treatment and evacuation.
