Ethiopia 🇪🇹
Explore volunteering opportunities in Ethiopia, including community initiatives, education, environmental projects, sustainable agriculture, non-profit organisations and other independent or structured experiences.
Projects may be located in different parts of the country and conditions can vary considerably by region. Some listings may be seasonal, archival or no longer active, so always check the publication date, exact location and current availability directly with the host or organisation.
How to use this page
Open the opportunity that interests you and read the complete announcement. Look for the contact details at the end of the listing to find the organisation’s website, email address or application procedure.
Before applying, confirm the activities, weekly hours, days off, supervision, accommodation, meals, local transport, project dates and any fees, deposits or other financial arrangements directly with the host.
Some opportunities may be fair exchanges with no mandatory participant fee, while others may request a contribution or programme fee. If payment is required, ask for the exact amount, what it covers and the applicable payment, cancellation and refund conditions before making a commitment.
Projects involving children, healthcare or vulnerable people should have appropriate safeguarding procedures, supervision and clear role boundaries. Make sure the proposed activities match your experience and qualifications.
Voluntouring does not organise placements, select volunteers, arrange visas or mediate between volunteers and hosts. It does not process participant payments between volunteers and host organisations. Publication on Voluntouring.org does not in itself constitute verification, endorsement or a recommendation of an organisation or programme.
Visas and volunteering in Ethiopia
Entry requirements depend on your nationality, length of stay and planned activities. A tourist visa should not automatically be used for structured volunteering, teaching or regular activities carried out for an organisation.
Ethiopia’s official eVisa system includes separate categories for different purposes of travel, including an NGO Work Visa for some foreign nationals invited by registered organisations for employment or short-term assignments.
Ask the host which immigration category applies to your activities and verify it through the official Ethiopian eVisa portal before travelling.
Current travel considerations
Important: security conditions vary considerably across Ethiopia. Current official travel advice warns against travel to Tigray, Amhara, Gambela and several other areas, as well as parts of Oromia and a number of international border regions.
Travel restrictions can be introduced at short notice, and transport, internet access and local services may be disrupted. If a project is located outside Addis Ababa or another major urban area, confirm its exact location before travelling and consult current travel advice for Ethiopia.
