Before accepting an opportunity, confirm the expected activities, weekly hours, days off, accommodation, meals, exact location, length of stay and any fees or contributions directly with the host.

Some projects may provide accommodation, meals or other forms of hospitality, while others may offer only part of these arrangements or request a contribution. Conditions vary between hosts and should always be confirmed before making travel plans.

Voluntouring does not organise placements, select volunteers, arrange visas or mediate between volunteers and hosts. Older announcements may remain online for archival and informational purposes.

Visas and volunteering in Spain

Immigration requirements depend on your nationality, the length of your stay and the activities you intend to undertake.

For stays of up to 90 days, Spain includes short-term volunteering among the non-gainful activities that may fall within the general Schengen entry framework. Depending on nationality, a visa may still be required, and travellers must meet the applicable entry conditions and be able to explain the purpose and circumstances of their stay.

For longer stays, Spain has a specific authorisation for certain formal volunteering programmes. This route applies to volunteer services carried out through legally constituted and registered volunteering organisations within programmes pursuing objectives of general interest for a non-profit cause.

The formal volunteering agreement must include information such as the programme, volunteer duties, supervision, hours, accommodation or maintenance arrangements, pocket money or expense reimbursement where applicable, and any necessary training.

Informal work exchanges and commercial hosts

Many opportunities listed on Voluntouring are informal hospitality or work exchanges rather than registered volunteering programmes. They may involve farms, hostels, guesthouses, retreats, private homes or other independent hosts.

Do not assume that the formal volunteering rules described above automatically apply to these arrangements. Activities performed regularly for a commercial business may raise different immigration or employment questions even when the participant receives accommodation or meals instead of a conventional salary.

If an exchange involves reception shifts, housekeeping, restaurant work, professional agricultural work or other activities normally carried out by employees, ask the host to clarify the arrangement and verify what rules apply to your nationality and circumstances.

European Solidarity Corps

Spain also hosts projects through the European Solidarity Corps (ESC). These are structured volunteering programmes organised through participating organisations.

Depending on the project, ESC support can include accommodation, food, travel assistance, insurance, training and pocket money. Conditions should always be checked in the individual announcement and through the responsible organisation.

Before accepting an exchange

Ask for a clear description of the daily schedule, activities and accommodation before travelling. Make sure you understand whether meals are provided, whether there are any costs and which expenses remain your responsibility.

If the project involves farming, construction, animal handling, surfing, driving or other practical activities, check that your insurance covers what you will actually be doing.
