Switzerland

Explore volunteering opportunities in Switzerland, including community projects, environmental initiatives, farms, cultural organisations and other independent or structured volunteering experiences.

This archive contains both recent and older announcements. Some projects may have ended, changed their conditions or no longer accept international volunteers, so always check the publication date and confirm current availability directly with the host or organisation.

How to use this page

Open the opportunity that interests you and read the complete announcement. Check the publication date, activity dates and any application deadline before contacting the host.

To apply or request more information, look for the contact details at the end of the listing. Depending on the project, these may include an official website, email address or application form.

Before accepting an opportunity, confirm the expected activities, weekly hours, days off, accommodation, meals, exact location, length of stay and any costs or contributions directly with the host.

Voluntouring does not organise placements, select volunteers, arrange permits or visas, or mediate between volunteers and hosts. Older announcements may remain online for archival and informational purposes.

Volunteering and Swiss immigration rules

Switzerland participates in the Schengen Area but is not a member of the European Union. Entry, residence and work rules also distinguish between EU/EFTA nationals and people from other countries.

Swiss immigration rules define some unpaid activities as work when they are activities that would normally be performed for payment. Calling an arrangement “volunteering”, “help exchange” or “work exchange” does not by itself determine its legal status.

The Swiss State Secretariat for Migration provides a limited exemption for certain voluntary activities carried out free of charge for ideological, social, charitable or environmental purposes. Under the current guidance, these activities should not exceed an annual average of six hours per week.

The same guidance states that people who enter Switzerland specifically in order to carry out voluntary work, and voluntary activities that do not meet those conditions, are subject to the applicable permit or notification requirements.

You can consult the Swiss State Secretariat for Migration guidance on employment and voluntary work.

EU and EFTA nationals

EU and EFTA nationals benefit from the agreement on the free movement of persons, but this does not mean that every form of work or work exchange can be undertaken without formalities.

For employment lasting up to three months, Switzerland generally uses a notification procedure rather than a residence permit. Different rules can apply depending on the activity, duration and host arrangement.

For current information, consult the official Swiss information about working in Switzerland as a foreign national.

Non-EU and non-EFTA nationals

Rules are generally more restrictive for nationals of countries outside the EU and EFTA. Switzerland limits access to its labour market for third-country nationals, and paid or work-like activities normally require authorisation.

A short tourist or Schengen stay should therefore not be assumed to authorise an informal farm, hostel, restaurant or hospitality exchange.

If you are travelling from outside the EU or EFTA, ask the host to explain what legal arrangements apply to international participants and verify this with the competent cantonal authority or Swiss representation before travelling.

Official entry and visa information is available from the Swiss State Secretariat for Migration.

Informal work exchanges and commercial hosts

Some opportunities on Voluntouring involve farms, hospitality businesses or other hosts where volunteers perform practical tasks in exchange for accommodation, meals or another benefit.

These arrangements deserve particular attention in Switzerland. Regular housekeeping, hotel or restaurant duties, professional agricultural work, cleaning, construction or other activities normally carried out by employees may be treated differently from occasional community volunteering.

Accommodation and meals do not automatically turn an activity into legal volunteering. If the tasks resemble a regular job, ask the host whether the arrangement has been checked with the relevant cantonal immigration or labour authority.

Fair exchange and practical conditions

Conditions vary considerably between projects. Some hosts may provide accommodation and meals, while others may offer accommodation only or have different arrangements.

Ask for a clear description of the daily schedule before travelling. Confirm how many hours are expected, what tasks are involved, whether there are days off and what happens if either side decides to end the exchange early.

Switzerland can also be an expensive destination for accommodation, food and transport. Keep sufficient personal funds for costs not covered by the host and for an unexpected change of plans.

Older EVS opportunities

Some older Switzerland listings on Voluntouring refer to the European Voluntary Service (EVS). EVS is a former European youth volunteering programme, so these announcements should be considered archival unless the organisation confirms a current equivalent opportunity.

Always check the programme currently offered by the organisation rather than relying on conditions described in an older EVS announcement.

Before accepting an opportunity

Ask the host to confirm:

  • the exact tasks and weekly hours;
  • whether the host is a private individual, association, non-profit organisation or commercial business;
  • accommodation and sleeping arrangements;
  • meals and other included expenses;
  • any payment, pocket money, stipend or contribution;
  • insurance arrangements;
  • whether a permit or notification is required;
  • which authority has confirmed the immigration or employment arrangements, where relevant.

For additional general guidance, read Voluntouring’s information about safety and legality in volunteering and work exchanges.

Important: project availability, immigration requirements, work authorisation rules and accommodation arrangements can change. Confirm current information directly with the host and relevant Swiss authorities before making travel or financial commitments.
