Before applying, confirm the activities, weekly hours, days off, supervision, accommodation, meals, minimum stay and any fees, allowances or other financial arrangements directly with the host.
Some opportunities may be fair exchanges with no mandatory participant fee, while others may request a contribution or programme fee. If a payment is required, check the exact amount, what it covers and the applicable payment or refund conditions before making a commitment.

Visas and volunteering in Sri Lanka
Entry requirements depend on your nationality, length of stay and planned activities. Sri Lankan immigration rules state that a Tourist Visa does not permit paid or unpaid employment.
Official immigration information also includes volunteers among the categories that may qualify for a Residence Visa, while personnel attached to NGOs and international NGOs are treated under a separate category. The appropriate arrangement therefore depends on the organisation and the activities involved.
If you will undertake regular duties for an NGO, school, retreat, farm, hostel, cafe or other organisation or business, ask the host which immigration status applies and verify it through the Sri Lanka Department of Immigration and Emigration.
Practical considerations
Conditions can vary significantly between coastal, urban and rural projects. Confirm local transport, access to medical care and the exact project location before travelling.
In parts of northern and eastern Sri Lanka, de-mining operations are still ongoing and some areas remain marked as minefields. Follow local instructions and do not leave cleared roads or paths in affected areas. For current information, consult current travel advice for Sri Lanka.
