Teaching, classroom support or conversation practice?

Read beyond the announcement’s title to understand what you would actually be doing:

• English teaching: preparing and delivering lessons, following an agreed curriculum and supporting students’ progress;
• Classroom support: helping a teacher prepare materials, organise learning activities or assist smaller groups;
• Conversation practice: helping learners practise spoken English through discussions, language games or other guided activities.

Ask who plans the lessons, which materials are available and who provides guidance. Informal conversation practice should not gradually turn into independent classroom teaching or other responsibilities that were not agreed beforehand.

English skills and teaching qualifications

English does not have to be your first language for every opportunity. However, hosts may have different language, experience and eligibility requirements, so check the individual announcement rather than assuming that every role accepts the same applicants.

Speaking English fluently is not the same as being trained to teach it. Some schools may require a qualification in teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL), previous classroom experience or other relevant credentials. Ask which qualifications are accepted and what preparation the role requires.

Confirm whether the opportunity is unpaid volunteering, an exchange with accommodation or meals, or a paid position. Do not assume that every announcement includes free accommodation, full meals or a salary.

If financial compensation is mentioned, ask for the exact amount, payment schedule and any deductions. Clarify whether it is a salary, an allowance or reimbursement of expenses. For paid teaching, request written details about the employer, contract, working hours and accommodation arrangements.

If participants must pay a contribution, programme fee or deposit, ask for the exact amount, what it covers and the payment, cancellation and refund conditions before committing.

Teaching responsibly and safeguarding learners

Volunteer activities should support local educators and follow the learners’ needs rather than replace paid teaching staff. Ask how your skills and proposed length of stay fit the school’s teaching programme and how learning continues between volunteers.

For activities involving children, ask about the organisation’s child protection policy, code of conduct, reference and background checks, training and supervision. Confirm who is responsible for safeguarding and how concerns should be reported.

Follow the organisation’s rules on contact with students, photographs, social media and personal information. Speaking English well is not a reason to bypass screening or give an unprepared volunteer independent responsibility for children.
