Accommodation, meals and contributions

Some opportunities provide food and accommodation at no cost in exchange for voluntary help. Others may provide accommodation only, offer pocket money or request a daily or monthly contribution towards meals, accommodation or project expenses.

A requested contribution does not automatically make a project more effective or responsible. Ask what the payment covers, who receives it and how it supports the project. Do not send money until the conditions, cancellation policy and recipient have been clearly identified.

Before travelling, confirm the activities, expected hours, days off, minimum stay, accommodation, meals, local transport and any equipment you need to bring.

Choosing an opportunity responsibly

Read the complete description and consider whether the proposed activities match your experience. Projects involving children, vulnerable people, healthcare, wildlife or isolated communities require particularly clear safeguarding, supervision and professional boundaries.

Avoid assuming that a short stay will necessarily create a positive impact. Ask the host how volunteers support the project, whether suitable supervision is provided and how local residents participate in decisions.

Visas, local rules and insurance

Entry and immigration requirements depend on your nationality, destination, length of stay and proposed activities. Even unpaid help may be treated as work under local rules. Check the latest requirements with the relevant immigration authorities, embassy or consulate before making travel arrangements.

Voluntouring and the hosts listed on the website do not arrange visas, provide immigration sponsorship, guarantee entry or cover personal travel costs. Read the general guidance about visas for volunteering abroad and safety and legality.

Travel insurance may be required by a host, immigration authority or activity provider. If you purchase a policy, check that it covers your destination, planned activities and the complete duration of your stay.

Voluntouring is not a travel agency, employer, recruitment service or placement organisation. It does not manage applications, payments, visas, insurance or travel arrangements. Volunteers and hosts communicate directly.
