How to use this page
Open the opportunity that interests you and read the complete announcement. Check the publication date, activity dates and any application deadline before contacting the host.
To apply or request more information, look for the contact details at the end of the listing. Depending on the project, these may include an official website, email address, social media page or application form.
Before accepting an opportunity, confirm the expected activities, weekly hours, days off, accommodation, meals, exact location, minimum stay and any fees or contributions directly with the host.
Voluntouring does not organise placements, select volunteers, arrange visas or residence permits, or mediate between volunteers and hosts. Older announcements may remain online for archival and informational purposes.
Food, accommodation and pocket money
Conditions vary considerably between projects. Some hosts may provide accommodation, meals or both in exchange for a reasonable amount of help. Other opportunities may provide only accommodation, request a contribution or operate through a structured funded programme.
Do not assume that every opportunity includes free food and accommodation. Confirm exactly what is provided and which expenses remain your responsibility before travelling.
For structured programmes and opportunities that may include a personal allowance, you can explore:
Serbia is currently a country not associated to the European Solidarity Corps Programme, but residents of Serbia can participate in certain ESC volunteering activities and some ESC projects can take place in Serbia. Eligibility depends on the individual opportunity.
Visas and volunteering in Serbia
Serbia is not part of the European Union or the Schengen Area and has its own entry, residence and employment rules. Requirements depend on your nationality, length of stay and the activities you intend to undertake.
Many nationalities can enter Serbia without a visa for a limited stay, while others require a visa. Visa-free entry should not automatically be interpreted as permission to undertake every form of volunteering, unpaid work or hospitality exchange.
Serbia also has a formal temporary residence procedure for foreign nationals engaged as volunteers. Official requirements can include registration of the voluntary service organiser in Serbia, a voluntary service agreement and documentation relating to the volunteering programme.
This means that a recognised organisation may have an important documentary role when hosting a foreign volunteer. There is no general rule that Serbian hosts or organisations are unable to provide supporting documentation.
For current visa requirements, consult the Serbian Ministry of Foreign Affairs visa information.
For information about residence and volunteering, consult the official Welcome to Serbia immigration portal.
Informal exchanges and commercial hosts
Some Serbia listings on Voluntouring are informal hospitality or work exchanges rather than registered volunteering programmes. Current listings include creative projects as well as an older hostel exchange in Belgrade.
An informal exchange with a hostel, business, farm or other commercial host should not automatically be treated in the same way as volunteering through a registered voluntary service organisation.
Regular reception duties, cleaning, hospitality work, agricultural work or other activities normally carried out by employees may have different immigration or employment implications, even when the participant receives accommodation or meals instead of a salary.
If the proposed activities resemble regular work, ask the host to explain the legal basis of the exchange and verify the requirements that apply to your nationality and circumstances.
Registration after arrival
Foreign nationals staying in Serbia must have their place of stay registered with the competent authority within 24 hours of arrival at the accommodation.
Hotels, hostels and other registered accommodation providers normally handle this registration for their guests. Private individuals hosting foreign visitors also have registration responsibilities.
If you are staying with a volunteer host, family, community or other private accommodation, ask who will register your stay and confirm that the procedure has been completed.
Official information is available on the Serbian Ministry of Foreign Affairs registration page.
Before accepting an opportunity
Ask the host to confirm:
- the identity and legal status of the host or organisation;
- the exact activities and weekly hours;
- days off and supervision arrangements;
- accommodation and sleeping conditions;
- meals and other included expenses;
- any fees, deposits or contributions;
- insurance arrangements;
- how your stay will be registered after arrival;
- which visa, residence or work requirements apply to your activities.
Current travel considerations
Demonstrations and large public gatherings can occur in Belgrade and other Serbian towns and cities, sometimes at short notice. Most are peaceful, but disruption and occasional confrontations are possible.
If you are travelling during a period of demonstrations, follow local information and avoid protests or large gatherings that appear tense. You can check the current travel advice for Serbia before departure.
