How to use this archive
- Open the announcement that interests you and check its publication or latest update date.
- Confirm the exact location, availability, required skills, duties, weekly hours, days off, supervision and minimum stay.
- Find the Contact Details section and contact the host through its official website, email address or application form.
- Request written confirmation of accommodation, meals, local transport, costs and cancellation conditions before booking your journey.
Accommodation, meals and contributions
Some opportunities provide accommodation and meals in exchange for a reasonable amount of voluntary help. Others may request a daily or monthly contribution to cover housing, food, transport, training or project expenses.
A contribution fee does not prove that a project is responsible or effective. Ask what the payment covers, who receives it, when it must be paid and whether receipts or a refund policy are available. Verify the host independently before sending money or personal documents.
Fair work exchanges
Some listings involve farms, guest accommodation, campsites or other income-generating activities. These exchanges should have clearly defined tasks, reasonable weekly hours and genuine days off. Volunteers should not replace regular employees, cover essential commercial shifts alone or perform work that requires a formal employment contract.
Ask whether the activity is legally considered volunteering, work exchange or employment in the destination country. Unpaid activities may still require a specific visa or work authorisation.
Wildlife and animal projects
Research every wildlife sanctuary, rehabilitation centre or conservation project carefully. Ask about permits, animal welfare policies, conservation objectives, professional supervision and what happens to animals in the long term.
Avoid projects that promote cub petting, walking with captive predators, breeding animals primarily for tourism, direct contact used as entertainment or opportunities to take photographs with wild animals. Volunteers should never carry out veterinary procedures or handle dangerous animals without suitable qualifications, training and supervision.
Children and vulnerable people
Voluntouring promotes opportunities for adults aged 18 and over. Projects involving children or vulnerable people require additional safeguards. Ask for a written safeguarding policy, appropriate screening, background checks where required, training, clear role boundaries and continuous supervision by qualified local staff.
Avoid placements that provide immediate or unsupervised access to children, encourage short-term emotional bonding or use children’s personal stories primarily for marketing. Read our guide to safer alternatives for volunteering with children.
Remote locations, safety and visas
Some farms, conservation projects and rural communities are located far from towns, hospitals and public transport. Before accepting a placement, confirm emergency procedures, transport arrangements, mobile coverage, access to medical care and who can assist you if you need to leave early.
Security conditions, health recommendations and visa rules vary by country, nationality and activity. Check official government travel advice, immigration authorities and recognised travel health information before departure.
Consider travel and medical insurance that explicitly covers your destination, volunteering activities, contact with animals, emergency treatment and evacuation where necessary.
Disclaimer: Voluntouring is an independent directory, not an employer, recruiter, travel agency or placement service. Hosts and volunteers communicate directly. Conduct your own research and confirm responsibilities, costs, accommodation, visas and safety arrangements before travelling.
