Before accepting an opportunity, confirm the expected activities, weekly hours, days off, accommodation, meals, exact location, length of stay and any fees or contributions directly with the host.

Some projects may provide accommodation, meals or other forms of hospitality, while others may offer only part of these arrangements or request a contribution. Conditions vary considerably between hosts and should always be confirmed before travelling.

Voluntouring does not organise placements, select volunteers, arrange visas or mediate between volunteers and hosts. Older announcements may remain online for archival and informational purposes.

European Solidarity Corps and pocket money

Portugal participates in the European Solidarity Corps (ESC), which offers structured volunteering opportunities through participating organisations.

ESC projects may provide support such as accommodation, food, travel assistance, insurance and pocket money according to the conditions of the individual programme.

Visas and volunteering in Portugal

Immigration requirements depend on your nationality, length of stay and the type of activity you intend to undertake. Visa-free travel or permission to enter Portugal as a visitor does not automatically determine whether a particular volunteering or work exchange activity is permitted.

Portugal has a specific residence framework for certain non-EU, non-EEA and non-Swiss nationals participating in recognised volunteering programmes. The formal volunteer route applies to programmes pursuing objectives of general interest and a non-profit purpose, where activities are unpaid apart from permitted expense reimbursements or pocket money.

For these recognised programmes, the host organisation may have formal responsibilities relating to the volunteer programme, supervision, accommodation, food, insurance and supporting documentation.

Informal work exchanges and commercial hosts

Many opportunities on Voluntouring are informal hospitality or work exchanges rather than recognised volunteering programmes. These may involve farms, hostels, guesthouses, retreats, tourism businesses or private hosts.

Do not assume that the formal volunteering residence route described above automatically applies to these arrangements. An activity that involves regular duties for a commercial business may be treated differently under immigration or employment rules even when no conventional salary is paid.

Accommodation or meals provided in exchange for help do not by themselves determine whether an arrangement is legally considered volunteering. If you are unsure, describe the exact activities to the relevant Portuguese authority or consulate rather than relying only on the label used by the host.

Fair exchange and practical arrangements

Portugal listings on Voluntouring include very different types of projects, from small farms and communities to hospitality businesses and environmental initiatives. The amount and nature of the help expected should be proportionate to what the host provides.

Ask for a clear description of the daily schedule before arrival. Regular reception shifts, housekeeping, restaurant work or other duties in a commercial operation deserve particular attention because they may resemble positions normally carried out by paid workers.

Make sure your travel or health insurance covers the activities you will actually perform. Farming, construction, surfing, animal care, driving and other activities may require additional coverage.
