Different types of opportunities
Not every listing in this archive represents the same type of arrangement. Opportunities may include unpaid volunteering, accommodation-for-help exchanges, cultural or educational programmes, internships and paid employment.
Teaching, childcare, hospitality, farm work and other regular duties may be subject to immigration or employment rules even when a host describes the arrangement informally as volunteering or cultural exchange. Paid positions should clearly state the employer, compensation, working hours and other employment conditions.
How to use this page
Check the publication date, programme dates and any application deadline. Confirm current activities, weekly hours, days off, accommodation, meals, minimum stay, local transport and any fees, deposits, salary, stipend or other financial arrangements directly with the host or organisation.
If payment is required, check the exact amount, what it covers and the cancellation or refund conditions. If a programme is described as fully funded, confirm which expenses are actually covered and whether costs are paid in advance or reimbursed later.
Entry and immigration rules vary between destinations. Tourist or visa-free entry should not automatically be assumed to permit employment, regular teaching, commercial work exchangesA work exchange is an arrangement in which a traveller contributes an agreed amount of help to a host in return for benefits such as accommodation, meals or learning opportunities. Conditions vary by host. or every form of volunteering. Check the relevant immigration authority or representative office before travelling.
