Before accepting an opportunity, confirm the expected activities, weekly hours, days off, accommodation, meals, exact location, length of stay and any fees or contributions directly with the host.

Some projects may provide accommodation, meals or other forms of hospitality, while others may offer only part of these arrangements. Do not assume that every opportunity includes free food and accommodation.

Voluntouring does not organise placements, select volunteers, arrange visas or immigration permission, or mediate between volunteers and hosts. Older announcements may remain online for archival and informational purposes.

Volunteering as a visitor in Wales

Wales follows UK immigration rules. Under the current Standard Visitor rules, a visitor may volunteer for up to 30 days in total with a charity registered with an appropriate UK charity regulator, including the Charity Commission for England and Wales.

This permission applies to genuine volunteering and should not be interpreted as permission to carry out any form of unpaid work. UK guidance distinguishes between a volunteer and a voluntary worker.

A genuine volunteer should not have an employment contract, replace a paid employee or receive payment in kind. Reasonable travel and subsistence expenses may be reimbursed.

Charity Worker visa

People coming to Wales specifically to undertake longer or more structured voluntary work for a charitable organisation may need the Temporary Work – Charity Worker visa.

This route requires a Certificate of Sponsorship from an approved sponsor. The work must relate to the activities of the sponsoring charity and qualifying participants can stay for up to 12 months.

The Charity Worker route is intended for genuine unpaid voluntary work and should not be used simply to replace normal salaried positions.

Private hosts, farms and hospitality exchanges

Some Wales listings on Voluntouring may involve private homes, farms, accommodation providers or other informal hosts. These arrangements are not automatically treated in the same way as volunteering for a registered charity.

Helping with house renovation, cleaning, gardening, reception, hospitality, farming or other regular duties in exchange for accommodation or meals may raise different immigration or employment questions depending on the circumstances.

Accommodation and food can also count as benefits in kind in some contexts. Calling an arrangement “volunteering”, “work exchange” or “help for accommodation” does not by itself determine its legal status.

If the proposed activities resemble regular work, particularly for a commercial host, check the applicable UK rules before travelling rather than relying only on the description provided by the host.

ETA, visas and entry requirements

Entry requirements depend on your nationality and immigration status. Many travellers who do not require a visitor visa, including citizens of EU countries, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein, normally need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) for a short visit unless an exemption applies.

An ETA provides permission to travel to the UK. It does not give additional permission to work or undertake activities that are prohibited under the Visitor rules.

Before accepting an opportunity

Ask the host to confirm:

the identity and legal status of the host;
whether it is a registered charity, non-profit organisation, private host or commercial business;
the exact activities and weekly hours;
days off and supervision arrangements;
accommodation and sleeping conditions;
meals and other included expenses;
any fees, deposits or contributions;
insurance arrangements;
which immigration permission applies to international participants.

If the host is a private individual or business rather than a registered charity, do not assume that the 30-day Standard Visitor volunteering provision applies.

Insurance and practical arrangements

Make sure your insurance covers the activities you will actually perform. Farming, construction, gardening, animal care, hiking, water sports, driving and other practical activities may require additional coverage.

Some projects may be located in rural areas with limited public transport. Confirm how to reach the project and keep sufficient personal funds for transport or alternative accommodation if an exchange ends earlier than expected.
