Visas and volunteering in Papua New Guinea
Do not assume that ordinary visitor entry automatically permits volunteering or an unpaid work exchange. Papua New Guinea has specific immigration arrangements for some volunteer activities, including a Special Exemption Visa category that can cover volunteers working with volunteer agencies on community-based projects.
Work permit requirements may also apply depending on the organisation and activities involved. Ask the host which immigration arrangement applies to international volunteers and verify it directly with the Papua New Guinea Immigration and Citizenship Authority before travelling.
Current travel considerations
Travel and logistics can be challenging in some parts of Papua New Guinea. Current travel advice recommends particular caution because of crime, tribal fighting and limited infrastructure, and advises against all but essential travel to Hela and Southern Highlands Provinces and most of Enga Province.
Check the exact location of the project and consult current travel advice for Papua New Guinea before departure, especially for rural or Highland projects.
