How to use this page

Open the opportunity that interests you and read the complete announcement. Check the publication date, activity dates and any application deadline before contacting the host.

To apply or request more information, look for the contact details at the end of the listing. Depending on the project, these may include an official website, email address or application form.

Before accepting an opportunity, confirm the expected activities, weekly hours, days off, accommodation, meals, exact location, length of stay and any fees or contributions directly with the host.

Some projects may provide accommodation, meals or other forms of hospitality, while others may offer only part of these arrangements. Do not assume that every opportunity includes free food and accommodation.

Voluntouring does not organise placements, select volunteers, arrange visas or immigration permission, or mediate between volunteers and hosts. Older announcements may remain online for archival and informational purposes.

Volunteering as a visitor in England

England follows UK immigration rules. Under the current Standard Visitor rules, a visitor may volunteer for up to 30 days in total with a charity registered with the Charity Commission for England and Wales.

UK immigration guidance distinguishes between volunteering and voluntary work. A volunteer should not have an employment contract, replace an employee or receive payment in kind. Reasonable travel and subsistence expenses may be reimbursed.

This means that the 30-day volunteering permission should not be interpreted as permission to perform any form of unpaid work in England.

For current rules, consult the official UK Standard Visitor guidance.

Charity Worker visa

People coming to England specifically for longer or more structured voluntary work with a charitable organisation may need the Temporary Work – Charity Worker visa.

This route requires a Certificate of Sponsorship from an approved sponsor and can allow qualifying voluntary work for up to 12 months.

The Charity Worker route is intended for voluntary fieldwork that directly advances the charitable purpose of the sponsoring organisation. It should not be used simply to fill positions that would normally be regular paid jobs.

See the official Charity Worker visa information.

Farm, hostel and hospitality exchanges

Some England listings on Voluntouring involve farms, hostels, campsites, glamping sites, retreats and other private or commercial hosts. These arrangements require particular attention because they may involve activities that resemble ordinary work rather than volunteering for a registered charity.

Regular reception shifts, housekeeping, cleaning, food service, agricultural work, maintenance or other duties normally carried out by workers should not automatically be assumed to be permitted simply because the participant receives accommodation or meals instead of wages.

UK visitor guidance specifically distinguishes genuine volunteering from voluntary work. Receiving benefits in kind, having fixed work obligations or filling a role that would otherwise be occupied by a worker may indicate a different type of arrangement.

Before travelling for an informal work exchange, check the actual activities rather than relying only on terms such as “volunteer”, “work exchange” or “help for accommodation”.

ETA, visas and entry requirements

Entry requirements depend on your nationality and immigration status. Many travellers who do not require a visitor visa, including most EU, EEA and Swiss citizens, need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling to the UK.

An ETA allows an eligible traveller to travel to the UK. It does not create additional permission to work or undertake activities that are prohibited under the Visitor rules.

Before travelling, consult the official UK ETA information and check whether you need a UK visa.

Before accepting an opportunity

Ask the host to confirm:

  • the identity and legal status of the host;
  • whether it is a registered charity, non-profit organisation, private host or commercial business;
  • the exact activities and weekly hours;
  • days off and supervision arrangements;
  • accommodation and sleeping arrangements;
  • meals and other included expenses;
  • any fees, deposits or contributions;
  • insurance arrangements;
  • which immigration permission applies to international participants.

If the proposed activities resemble regular work, verify the immigration requirements independently rather than relying only on assurances from the host.

Insurance and practical arrangements

Make sure your insurance covers the activities you will actually perform. Farming, construction, animal care, sailing, outdoor activities, driving and other practical tasks may require additional coverage.

Keep sufficient personal funds for transport, food or alternative accommodation in case an exchange ends earlier than expected.

For additional general guidance, read Voluntouring’s information about safety and legality in volunteering and work exchanges.

Important: project availability, immigration rules, ETA requirements, accommodation arrangements and permitted activities can change. Confirm current information directly with the host and consult official UK sources before making travel or financial commitments.
