How to use this page
Open the opportunity that interests you and read the full announcement carefully. Check the publication date, activity dates and any application deadline before contacting the host.
To apply or request more information, look for the contact details at the end of the listing. Depending on the project, these may include an official website, email address or application form.
Before accepting an opportunity, confirm the expected activities, weekly hours, days off, accommodation, meals, exact location, transport arrangements and any fees or contributions directly with the host or organisation.
Voluntouring does not organise placements, select volunteers or mediate between volunteers and hosts. Older announcements may remain online for archival and informational purposes.
Important rules about volunteer work in Iceland
Iceland has specific restrictions on unpaid volunteer work. According to official Icelandic guidance, volunteers cannot be used to perform work that would normally be paid under the Icelandic labour market.
The authorities specifically state that unpaid work at farms, restaurants, guesthouses and businesses operating in tourism does not fall under the definition of permitted volunteer work. Volunteer activities are generally intended for qualifying non-profit organisations working in charitable, cultural or humanitarian fields.
If an opportunity involves a farm, guesthouse, hostel, restaurant, tourism business or another commercial activity, verify the current legal status of the arrangement before travelling, even if accommodation or meals are offered instead of wages.
Residence requirements for volunteers
Entry and residence requirements depend on your nationality, length of stay and the nature of the volunteering activity.
For volunteers who require an Icelandic residence permit, the official volunteer permit is intended for people aged 18 or over who have been invited to work with a recognised non-governmental organisation operating on a non-profit basis in charitable or humanitarian fields.
Applicants must also meet requirements relating to financial support and other conditions. A volunteer residence permit does not give the holder the right to take paid employment in Iceland.
Importantly, citizens from outside the European Economic Area, EFTA countries and the Faroe Islands may be subject to specific residence requirements for volunteering regardless of the length of the stay.
Check the current rules through the official Icelandic information about residence permits for volunteers and, where relevant, the applicable visa requirements before travelling.
Accommodation, insurance and practical arrangements
Conditions vary between projects. A legitimate volunteer programme may provide accommodation, meals or financial support, while in other cases participants may need to support themselves. Do not assume that every opportunity in this archive includes free food and accommodation.
Make sure your insurance covers the activities involved in the project, particularly outdoor conservation work, physical activities, driving or work in remote areas.
Icelandic weather and road conditions can also change quickly. If a project is based in a remote or rural area, confirm transport, suitable clothing, emergency arrangements and access to essential services with the organisation before arrival.
For additional general guidance, read Voluntouringโs information about safety and legality in volunteering and work exchanges.
Important: project availability, immigration rules, volunteer regulations and insurance conditions can change. Confirm current information directly with the organisation and consult relevant official sources before making travel or financial commitments.
