Explore volunteering opportunities in India, including community projects, NGOs, educational initiatives, environmental activities, work exchanges and other independent volunteering experiences.
India is a large and diverse country, and conditions vary considerably between regions and projects. Some opportunities may be seasonal, archived or no longer active, so always check the publication date and confirm current availability directly with the host or organisation.
How to use this page 🔍
Open the opportunity that interests you and read the full announcement carefully. Check the publication date, activity dates and any application deadline before contacting the organisation or host.
To apply or request more information, look for the contact details at the end of the listing. Depending on the project, these may include an official website, email address or application form.
Before accepting an opportunity, confirm the expected activities, weekly hours, days off, accommodation, meals, exact location, transport arrangements and any fees or contributions directly with the host.
Some projects provide accommodation, meals or other forms of hospitality, while others may ask volunteers to contribute towards food, accommodation, administration or project costs. If a fee or contribution is requested, ask for the exact amount, what it covers and whether any part is refundable before making a payment.
Voluntouring does not organise placements, select volunteers or mediate between volunteers and organisations. Older announcements may remain online for archival and informational purposes.
Visa requirements for volunteering in India
Visa requirements depend on your nationality, the nature of the project and the length of your stay. Do not assume that any tourist visa automatically permits unrestricted volunteering or NGO activities.
According to the Government of India’s current e-Visa information, eligible travellers may undertake short-term voluntary work for a maximum of one month, provided that the activity does not involve monetary payment or other consideration in return. A letter from the organisation concerned may be required as part of the e-Visa application.
The official guidance also distinguishes short-term voluntary work from broader NGO activities and employment. Longer placements, paid activities or projects with different responsibilities may therefore require another visa category.
Before applying or booking travel, check your individual circumstances through the official Government of India e-Visa portal or the relevant Indian embassy or consulate.
Insurance and regional travel conditions
Choose travel insurance that covers the activities involved in your project. Volunteering may include teaching, childcare, farming, construction, animal care, outdoor work or other activities that are not automatically covered by every standard travel policy.
Travel conditions also vary significantly across India. Some border areas and regions may be subject to official travel warnings, security restrictions or rapidly changing local conditions. If a project is located in Jammu and Kashmir, Manipur, close to an international border or in another area subject to specific travel advice, check current information from your own government before making plans.
For additional general guidance, read Voluntouring’s information about safety and legality in volunteering and work exchanges.
Important: project availability, fees, visa rules, regional travel conditions and insurance requirements can change. Confirm current information directly with the host and consult relevant official sources before making travel or financial commitments.
