Volunteering opportunities in Ashrams ๐ง๐ฟโโ๏ธ
What is an ashram?
In the ancient Vedic tradition, the Ashram is the home of the Guru, the Master or, more simply, the yoga teacher who has decided to host his students in order to better transmit his teaching, that of his Masters and of the millenary tradition to which he refers.
The Ashram is therefore a sort of monastery, a hermitage, a quiet and peaceful place where life takes place following the rhythms of nature and the rituals of the yoga tradition.
The main characteristics of an Ashram
The main feature of the Ashram is the work that is carried out on multiple levels.
- At the base of everything is the physical work, the daily work that every living being is called to do to maintain itself. One must simply perform the task assigned by the master with the utmost effort to achieve the best result. The habit of this mental orientation enables us to perform our tasks better when we are engaged in the world of work and family.
- Then we have the psychic and energetic work that takes shape in the asanas, pranyama, daily sadhana and other practices that may be assigned by the Master with the aim of improving the psychophysical balance and stabilize the base from which to start the spiritual work.
Spiritual evolution (a better understanding of our existential reality and of the goals we have to achieve on earth, in this life) is the real goal of the activity that takes place in the ashram.
Purification, meditation, contemplation, reflection are all practices that are best carried out in the silence of the Ashram, or in the presence of the Master who corrects and encourages, illuminating the path that must necessarily be taken.

Volunteering in an Ashram
Some of these opportunities areย free (you receive free food and accommodation in exchange for voluntary work). Others projects -especially those located in developing countries- might require aย daily/monthly contribution fee for the food and the accommodation. Remember that many areas around the world are still developing and volunteering canโt always be a โfreeโ thing.
