How to use this page
Open the opportunity that interests you and read the full announcement carefully. Check the publication date, activity dates and any application deadline before contacting the host.
To apply or request more information, look for the contact details at the end of the listing. Depending on the project, these may include an official website, email address, phone number or application form.
Before accepting an opportunity, confirm the expected activities, weekly hours, days off, accommodation, meals, exact location, transport arrangements and any fees or contributions directly with the host or organisation.
Some projects may provide accommodation, meals or other forms of hospitality, while others may have different arrangements. Always confirm exactly what is included before making a commitment.
Voluntouring does not organise placements, select volunteers, arrange visas or mediate between volunteers and hosts. Older announcements may remain online for archival and informational purposes.
Structured voluntary service in Germany
Germany has several forms of structured voluntary service. These include the Federal Voluntary Service (Bundesfreiwilligendienst), as well as voluntary programmes in social, environmental, cultural and other public-interest fields.
Foreign nationals can participate in certain formal voluntary service programmes when the applicable residence requirements are met. Conditions differ from those of informal hospitality exchanges, farm stays or arrangements with private and commercial hosts.
A work exchange involving accommodation or meals should not automatically be assumed to have the same legal status as a recognised voluntary service programme, particularly when the activities resemble regular productive or commercial work.
Visas and volunteering in Germany
Entry and residence requirements depend on your nationality, length of stay and purpose of travel. Citizens of EU and EEA countries and Switzerland are subject to different rules from most other foreign nationals.
For third-country nationals, the visa or residence permit required depends on the type of activity and duration of the stay. Germany also provides specific residence arrangements for certain recognised forms of voluntary service.
Do not assume that visa-free entry or a short-stay Schengen visa automatically permits every type of volunteering, hospitality exchange or unpaid activity.
For current information, consult the Federal Foreign Office visa information for Germany. The official Visa Navigator can also help identify the appropriate procedure according to the purpose of your stay.
Insurance and practical arrangements
Make sure your insurance covers the activities involved in the project. Farming, construction, animal care, conservation work and other practical activities may not automatically be covered by every standard travel policy.
If a contribution or deposit is requested, ask for the exact amount, what it covers and whether it is refundable before making any payment.
For additional general guidance, read Voluntouring’s information about safety and legality in volunteering and work exchanges.
Important: project availability, accommodation arrangements, immigration requirements and insurance conditions can change. Confirm current information directly with the host and consult relevant official sources before making travel or financial commitments.
