Getting from Lungi Airport to Freetown ✈️⛴️
Freetown and Lungi International Airport are separated by a wide estuary. Water taxis are commonly used for the transfer, while travelling by road takes considerably longer. During the rainy season, rough sea conditions can affect boat services. Ask your host how arrival transport is organised before booking your journey.
Volunteering and community projects in Sierra Leone
Depending on the organisation, activities may involve educational support, fundraising, administration, community development or practical assistance. Roles involving children, healthcare or vulnerable people require appropriate safeguarding, supervision and clear professional boundaries.
Visas, health and travel preparation
Entry requirements depend on nationality and purpose of travel. Sierra Leone provides eVisa services and separate permit procedures; volunteering should not automatically be treated as ordinary tourism. Check the Sierra Leone Immigration Department and confirm the appropriate status before travelling.
Travellers currently need proof of yellow fever vaccination and must complete a health travel declaration before entering or leaving Sierra Leone. Check current travel advice for Sierra Leone, health requirements and insurance coverage before departure.
