Open the opportunity that interests you and read the complete announcement. Check the publication date, activity dates and any application deadline before contacting the host.
To apply or request more information, look for the contact details at the end of the listing. Depending on the project, these may include an official website, email address or application form.
Before accepting an opportunity, confirm the expected activities, weekly hours, days off, accommodation, meals, exact location, length of stay and any fees or contributions directly with the host.
Some projects may provide accommodation, meals or other forms of hospitality, while others may offer only part of these arrangements. Do not assume that every opportunity is free or includes food and accommodation.
Voluntouring does not organise placements, select volunteers, arrange visas or immigration permission, or mediate between volunteers and hosts. Older announcements may remain online for archival and informational purposes.
Volunteering as a visitor in the UK
The United Kingdom is not part of the European Union or the Schengen Area and has its own immigration rules.
Under the current Standard Visitor rules, a visitor may volunteer for up to 30 days in total with a charity registered with the Charity Commission for England and Wales, the Charity Commission for Northern Ireland or the Scottish Charity Regulator.
This permission does not mean that visitors can undertake any kind of unpaid work. Standard Visitors are generally prohibited from working for a UK company or organisation unless the activity is specifically permitted by the immigration rules.

Charity Worker visa
People coming to the UK specifically to undertake longer or more structured voluntary work for a charity may need the Temporary Work – Charity Worker visa.
This route requires a Certificate of Sponsorship from an organisation licensed to sponsor Charity Workers. The voluntary work must relate directly to the charitable purpose of the sponsoring organisation and the route can allow qualifying voluntary work for up to 12 months.
The Charity Worker route is not intended to provide unpaid replacements for ordinary employees. UK sponsor guidance specifies that qualifying voluntary fieldwork should not normally be work offered at a waged or salaried rate and should directly advance the charity’s purpose.

Farm, hostel and hospitality exchanges
Particular caution is needed with informal work exchanges involving farms, hostels, guesthouses, campsites, restaurants, retreats and other commercial activities.
Receiving accommodation or meals instead of wages does not automatically make an activity permitted volunteering. Regular reception shifts, housekeeping, cleaning, food service, agricultural work or other duties normally carried out by workers may fall outside the volunteering activities permitted to a Standard Visitor.
A host describing an arrangement as “volunteering”, “work exchange” or “help for accommodation” does not by itself determine its immigration or employment status.
Before travelling for this type of exchange, describe the actual tasks, hours and host organisation when checking the official UK requirements. Do not rely only on the terminology used in the listing.
ETA, visas and entry requirements
Entry requirements depend on your nationality and immigration status. Many travellers who do not require a visitor visa, including most EU, EEA and Swiss citizens, now need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling to the UK.
An ETA is permission to travel to the UK. It does not give additional permission to work or volunteer beyond the activities allowed under the Visitor rules.
Irish citizens and people who already hold certain forms of UK immigration permission do not normally need an ETA.
Before travelling, consult the official UK ETA information and check whether you need a UK visa.
Before accepting an opportunity
Ask the host to confirm:
- the identity and legal status of the host organisation;
- whether it is a registered charity, non-profit organisation, private host or commercial business;
- the exact activities and weekly hours;
- days off and supervision arrangements;
- accommodation and sleeping conditions;
- meals and other included expenses;
- any fees, deposits or contributions;
- insurance arrangements;
- which immigration route or permission applies to international participants.
If the host says that no visa, ETA or work permission is required, verify this independently using official UK information when the proposed activities resemble regular work.
Insurance and practical arrangements
Make sure your insurance covers the activities you will actually perform. Farming, construction, animal care, sailing, outdoor activities, driving and other practical tasks may require additional coverage.
Keep enough personal funds for transport, food or alternative accommodation if the exchange ends earlier than expected. This can be particularly important when volunteering in remote rural areas.
