Explore work exchange opportunities abroad, where travellers provide an agreed amount of help in return for accommodation, meals or other clearly defined benefits.

Work exchanges can take place on farms, in eco-communities, hostels, intentional communities, non-profit organisations, family homes and other projects. Conditions vary considerably, so always read the individual listing carefully before applying.

What is a work exchange?

A work exchange is an arrangement in which a participant provides agreed help and receives something in return, commonly accommodation, meals or both. It is different from ordinary paid employment because a salary is not normally the main form of compensation.

A traditional fair exchange should involve a limited and reasonable workload with genuine time off. Around 4 to 5 hours of help per day is common in many exchanges, but there is no single schedule that applies to every host. The expected weekly hours, days off and responsibilities should always be stated clearly before the participant agrees to join.

Accommodation or meals alone do not automatically make an arrangement fair, legal or genuinely voluntary. Regular productive work for a commercial business may be treated as employment under local labour or immigration rules even when no salary is paid.

How to use this page

Open the opportunity that interests you and read the complete announcement. Check the publication date and look for the contact details at the end of the listing to find the host’s website, email address or application procedure.

Before applying, confirm the activities, weekly hours, days off, accommodation, meals, sleeping arrangements, minimum stay, local transport and any fees, deposits or other financial conditions directly with the host.

Some listings are traditional fair exchanges with no mandatory participant fee. Other non-standard programmes or exchanges may request a contribution towards accommodation, meals, activities or other costs. A participant fee does not automatically make an opportunity more or less responsible, ethical or worthwhile.

If payment is required, ask for the exact amount, what it covers and the applicable payment, cancellation and refund conditions before making a commitment.

Voluntouring does not organise placements, select participants, arrange visas or mediate between volunteers and hosts. It does not process participant payments between travellers and host organisations. Publication on Voluntouring.org does not in itself constitute verification, endorsement or a recommendation of an opportunity.

Work exchange, volunteering or employment?

These terms should not automatically be treated as interchangeable. A community or non-profit volunteering project may operate differently from an exchange at a hostel, farm, guesthouse or other income-generating activity.

If a participant is expected to cover regular shifts, perform duties normally assigned to employees or provide substantial productive work for a commercial activity, the arrangement may be treated as employment even when compensation is limited to accommodation or meals.

Before travelling, check whether the activities you will perform are permitted under your immigration status. Tourist or visitor entry does not automatically allow every form of unpaid work exchange.
