What is a conuco? 🌱🇩🇴
In the Dominican Republic, a conuco is a small plot of land used for agriculture, livestock or both, traditionally associated with household food production. The term is still used in Dominican agricultural statistics. If a rural project mentions a conuco, ask what is grown or raised there and what volunteers would actually do.
Volunteering and work exchanges
Depending on the host, activities may include educational support, community initiatives, hospitality, animal care, farming or visitor services. Roles with regular commercial duties, fixed full-time schedules or payment may be closer to employment or seasonal work than volunteering and should be described accordingly.
Entry and volunteering requirements
All passengers entering or leaving the Dominican Republic on commercial flights must complete the free electronic E-Ticket. This is an entry and customs form, not permission to volunteer or work.
The Dominican immigration system includes specific permits for certain voluntary activities, including the PADEI permit for recognised voluntary service and a short-term permit that can cover voluntary community service in some circumstances. Do not assume tourist entry is sufficient. Check the Dominican Directorate General of Migration and confirm the appropriate status with the host before travelling.
