Teaching abroad and community learning

Teaching opportunities may involve working alongside local educators in schools or supporting learning activities organised by community groups. Depending on the project, this could include subject lessons, tutoring, mentoring or educational workshops.

Ask which subjects and age groups need support, which language is used in lessons and what materials are available. Activities should follow the educational team’s priorities rather than assume that visiting volunteers need to introduce different teaching methods.

Confirm how your proposed dates and length of stay fit the teaching programme. A short holiday or a longer sabbatical does not automatically match a school’s needs or timetable.

Ask who coordinates the sessions, how volunteers receive guidance and what preparation is expected between lessons. For activities involving children, online contact should follow the organisation’s safeguarding procedures and agreed communication channels.

Qualifications and role boundaries

Describe your subject knowledge, teaching qualifications, language skills and classroom experience accurately when applying. Ask which credentials the host requires and whether they are appropriate for the proposed role.

Knowing a subject well is not the same as being prepared to teach it. If you have little teaching experience, look for a clearly defined support role with preparation and supervision rather than accepting independent responsibility for a class.

If you are expected to plan a curriculum, assess students or train other teachers, clarify the required experience and who provides educational oversight. Volunteer activities should support locally led education, not be used to replace paid teaching staff.

Safeguarding and continuity

For roles involving children, ask for the organisation’s child protection policy and code of conduct. Confirm how volunteers are screened, which references or background checks are required, what training is provided and whom to contact with a safeguarding concern.

Any individual tutoring should follow agreed safeguarding arrangements. Follow the organisation’s rules on communication with students, photographs, recordings, social media and personal information, including during online activities.

Ask how your contribution fits the existing teaching schedule and how learning continues after you leave. Agree on any lesson notes, materials or handover needed by the teaching team.

Confirm whether the arrangement is volunteering, a work exchange or paid teaching. Do not assume that every opportunity includes free accommodation and meals. If financial compensation is mentioned, ask what it covers and whether it is a salary, an allowance or reimbursement of expenses.

If participants must pay a contribution, programme fee or deposit, ask for the exact amount, what it covers and the payment, cancellation and refund conditions before committing.
