What does teaching German abroad involve? 🧑🏫
German language teaching may involve preparing lessons, explaining grammar and vocabulary, supporting reading and writing activities or helping learners develop conversational skills. Teaching independently, assisting a teacher and providing informal language practice involve different responsibilities. Simply speaking German with an international host does not necessarily constitute teaching.
German skills and teaching qualifications
Speaking German fluently is not the same as being trained to teach it. Some projects accept volunteers with limited teaching experience for supervised activities, while others require relevant qualifications, classroom experience or training in German as a foreign language (Deutsch als Fremdsprache, DaF).

Teaching responsibly and safeguarding learners
Volunteer activities should support local educators rather than unnecessarily replace qualified teaching staff. Ask how lessons are organised, who supervises volunteers and how learning continues after they leave.
For projects involving children, confirm safeguarding policies, background checks, training, supervision and reporting procedures.
