Volunteer in Bukit Lawang: what the role involved
The original schedule was approximately 4–5 hours a day, five days a week, equal to around 20–25 hours per week.
The social media work included capturing daily stories, producing one weekly reel, joining jungle treks to film authentic local experiences and helping develop a warm brand voice for ethical travellers.
For around two hours on most days, the volunteer was also expected to read, sing and play with the family’s two boys, who were aged 1 and 3 when the opportunity was published. Native speakers of Dutch, Arabic or Mandarin were preferred to support gentle language learning.
What was offered
The original announcement offered accommodation at the eco-guesthouse, visa costs covered, meals during working hours and a monthly stipend based on experience.
The role also included mentoring, practical portfolio development and time to experience the rivers, rainforest trails and village life around Bukit Lawang.
Who the role was designed for
The opportunity was aimed at recent graduates and early-career creators who were kind, reliable, comfortable around young children and physically prepared for tropical trails and occasional multi-day jungle treks.
Previous experience managing social media accounts was considered useful, although curiosity, creativity, independence and consistency were described as the main qualities required.
