Explore volunteer opportunities with a stipend, including supported placements, internships, community programmes and specialist roles where participants may receive a financial allowance.
Stipends may help cover living expenses, food, transport or other costs during a placement. The amount, payment schedule and additional benefits vary between organisations. Some opportunities also provide accommodation, meals or insurance.
What is a stipend? 💰
A stipend is a fixed financial allowance provided to someone participating in a programme, internship, placement or specific role. It may be paid weekly, monthly or according to another agreed schedule. Unlike a conventional salary, a stipend is often intended to support participation or living expenses, although terminology and legal arrangements vary. It should not automatically be confused with pocket money, expense reimbursement or wages.
Volunteering and stipend-supported placements
Some non-profit organisations and community programmes provide stipends to volunteers taking on longer-term responsibilities or specialist assignments.
For example, the Leadership Residents Program in Cambodia has offered accommodation, meals, insurance and a monthly stipend. Other examples include specialist placements in healthcare and wildlife conservation.
Some announcements describe ordinary paid employment or pocket money using similar terminology. Always confirm what kind of financial arrangement is actually offered. A stipend does not automatically mean that a position is legally classified as volunteering.
How to use this page
Check the publication date, programme dates and current availability. Ask the host to confirm the exact stipend amount, currency, payment frequency, whether the allowance is guaranteed or conditional, working hours, days off, minimum stay and required qualifications.
Also clarify accommodation, meals, insurance, travel expenses, any fees or deductions and applicable employment, tax and visa requirements. A stipend may not cover all living costs.
