Explore turtle conservation volunteer opportunities involving the protection, monitoring, rescue and rehabilitation of turtles and their habitats around the world.
Many projects focus on sea turtles, particularly nesting beaches, hatcheries, marine research and community conservation. Other initiatives may involve freshwater turtles or terrestrial tortoises. Activities vary according to the species, location, season and conservation needs.
What is turtle conservation? 🐢🌊
Turtle conservation involves protecting turtle species, their habitats and the conditions they need to survive and reproduce. Activities may include monitoring populations, protecting nesting areas, reducing threats from pollution and fishing equipment, habitat restoration and caring for injured animals. Sea turtles, freshwater turtles and tortoises have different ecological needs, so conservation methods depend on the species and local circumstances.
Volunteering with turtles
Depending on the project, volunteers may assist with beach patrols, nest monitoring, data collection, habitat maintenance, environmental education or supporting wildlife rehabilitation facilities. Some organisations also need help with fundraising, research, administration and community outreach.
For an example, read about La Tortuga Viva in Mexico, a community conservation project involving sea turtle nesting protection, sanctuary maintenance and environmental education.
Wildlife handling, nest relocation, hatchling releases and veterinary treatment require appropriate authorisation, training and supervision. Volunteers should not assume that touching turtles or releasing hatchlings is part of a responsible conservation experience. Ask how the organisation manages animal welfare and how volunteers contribute to its work.
How to use this page
Check each listing’s publication date and confirm current activities, required qualifications, supervision, working hours, days off, accommodation, meals, minimum stay and any fees or other costs directly with the organisation. Many turtle conservation activities are seasonal or involve night patrols.
Ask about conservation permits, wildlife handling procedures, insurance, suitable equipment and safety arrangements. For remote coastal projects, check transport, access to healthcare, local conditions and current travel advisories before making arrangements.
Publication on Voluntouring.org does not constitute verification or endorsement of a project’s conservation practices, animal welfare standards, legal authorisations or volunteer conditions.
