Accommodation, meals and contributions
Some opportunities provide accommodation or meals in exchange for a reasonable amount of voluntary help. Others may request a daily or monthly contribution to cover housing, food, transport, training or project expenses.
A contribution fee does not prove that a project is responsible or effective. Ask exactly what the payment covers, who receives it, when it must be paid and whether receipts or a refund policy are available. Verify the organisation independently before sending money or personal documents.
Choose projects responsibly
Prioritise locally led initiatives with clearly defined activities, realistic expectations and suitable supervision. Volunteers should support local professionals and community members rather than replace paid workers or perform essential duties without appropriate qualifications.
Medical, nursing, counselling and other specialist activities must only be undertaken by suitably qualified volunteers. Confirm professional licensing, insurance, permitted clinical tasks and supervision requirements with the host and the relevant local authorities.
Children and vulnerable people
Voluntouring promotes opportunities for adults aged 18 and over. Projects involving children or vulnerable people require additional safeguards. Ask for a written safeguarding policy, appropriate screening, background checks where required, volunteer training, clear role boundaries and continuous supervision by qualified local staff.

Safety, visas and local conditions
Important: conditions can vary considerably between countries and regions. Parts of Cameroon and the Democratic Republic of the Congo may be subject to official warnings against travel or non-essential travel. Do not assume that a destination is safe simply because an announcement is online.
Check the project’s exact location against the latest government travel advice for your nationality. If official authorities advise against travelling to that area, postpone the trip or choose another project. Travel insurance may not be valid when travelling against official advice.
Visa and immigration rules also depend on your nationality and the activities involved. Unpaid volunteering may still require specific authorisation.
Consider travel and medical insurance that explicitly covers your destination, volunteering activities, emergency treatment and evacuation.
