Current safety notice: as of September 2026, the U.S. Department of State advises against travel to the Democratic Republic of the Congo because of health, crime, unrest, terrorism and kidnapping. The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office advises against all travel to several parts of the country and against all but essential travel to some additional areas. Conditions can change quickly.
Before considering a project in DR Congo
Check the exact location of the opportunity rather than relying only on the country name. Security conditions differ considerably between Kinshasa and regions affected by armed conflict or severe instability.
Before making any plans, consult current travel advice issued for your nationality, confirm that your insurance covers the destination and planned activities and consider whether emergency medical care or evacuation would realistically be available.
Some countries may also apply additional health screening or travel restrictions to people arriving from the DRC during disease outbreaks. Check the requirements both for the DRC and for any countries where you will transit or travel afterwards.
Visa and immigration requirements
Entry requirements depend on nationality, duration and purpose of travel. Check current information with the Direction Générale de Migration of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the relevant Congolese embassy or consulate.
Do not assume that ordinary visitor status automatically permits volunteering, professional services or unpaid work. The appropriate immigration status may depend on the activities, organisation and duration of the stay.

Health and medical volunteering
Health precautions are particularly important in the DRC. Current entry requirements include proof of yellow fever vaccination, and additional vaccination or health requirements may apply depending on the traveller and itinerary.
Check the latest travel health information for the Democratic Republic of the Congo and appropriate medical guidance before travelling.
Healthcare, dentistry, nursing and other professional roles require particular care. Volunteers should confirm local licensing or professional requirements, permitted clinical activities, supervision, infection-control procedures, professional liability insurance and emergency arrangements before considering a placement.

Ask about the specific role, supervision, accommodation, meals, transport, security arrangements, minimum stay and any fees, deposits or other financial conditions.
Some opportunities may have no mandatory participant fee, while others may request a contribution or programme fee. If payment is required, ask for the exact amount, what it covers and the applicable payment, cancellation and refund conditions before making a commitment.
