DR Congo or Republic of the Congo? 🇨🇩
The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), whose capital is Kinshasa, and the Republic of the Congo, whose capital is Brazzaville, are two separate countries. This archive covers the Democratic Republic of the Congo only. If a project mentions simply “Congo”, confirm the country and exact location before applying.
Current travel and health considerations
As of October 2026, the U.S. Department of State advises against all travel to the DRC because of serious health and security risks. The UK government also warns against travel to several regions and against all but essential travel to certain additional areas, including parts of Kinshasa.
An outbreak of Ebola disease caused by Bundibugyo virus is ongoing. In its 23 October 2026 update, the World Health Organization reported sustained transmission and further geographic spread in the DRC. Consult the latest WHO outbreak report and CDC travel health information before making any plans.
Check the exact province or city, official advice for your nationality, health requirements and any restrictions affecting transit or onward travel. Confirm whether insurance and emergency medical evacuation would be available. Travelling against official advice may invalidate insurance coverage.
Visas and professional requirements
Entry requirements depend on nationality and activities. Consult the Direction Générale de Migration and the relevant Congolese embassy or consulate. Do not assume that visitor status permits unpaid clinical work or other professional volunteering.
The DRC requires yellow fever vaccination certificates for arriving travellers aged nine months and older, subject to applicable medical exemptions. Healthcare volunteers must also confirm local professional authorisation, permitted duties, clinical supervision, infection-control procedures, patient safeguarding and appropriate insurance.
