NGO: Non-governmental organizations.

In recent times you may have often heard of NGOs, especially in relation to the immigration emergency. You have probably wondered who these organizations are and what they do. By definition, an NGO is a non-profit entity that operates independently of states and governments. The typical field of activity of non-governmental organizations is development cooperation.

What are NGOs

All NGOs share two characteristics:

• they carry out their activities on a non-profit basis
• do not depend on any state.

The inspiring idea behind the birth of an NGO is always the pursuit of an idealistic goal. For example, improving the living conditions of the place where it operates. In this sense, we generally speak of “development cooperation”, with the broader meaning of progress involving education, health and society as a whole.

Despite having these aspects in common, non-governmental organizations can differ greatly from one another.

Typically, non-governmental organizations are committed to supporting developing countries, an objective they pursue both with on-site projects and assistance and through awareness-raising and fundraising campaigns in the richer countries.

Being non-profit organizations, NGOs finance themselves thanks to donations from private citizens, institutions and foundations. If recognized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, they can also access the contributions reserved for associations of cooperatives: to be able to take advantage of these contributions, an NGO must be able to demonstrate that it has carried out development cooperation activities for at least three years.
