What is an NGO?
NGO stands for non-governmental organisation. The term is generally used for organisations that operate independently from direct government control and pursue social, humanitarian, environmental, educational, cultural or other public-interest goals.
NGOs can differ considerably in size, structure, funding and legal status. Some are locally based community organisations, while others operate nationally or internationally. They may receive funding from private donors, foundations, institutions, public grants or other sources while remaining non-governmental in their governance.
Many NGOs are also non-profit organisations, but the two terms are not always legally interchangeable. The exact definitions and registration requirements depend on the country.
An organisation describing itself as an NGO is not automatically verified or formally registered. If legal status matters to your decision, ask for the organisation’s registered name and relevant registration details and verify them through appropriate local sources where possible.

Some NGO programmes may have no mandatory participant fee, while others may request a contribution or programme fee. If payment is required, ask for the exact amount, what it covers and the applicable payment, cancellation and refund conditions before making a commitment.

Safeguarding and professional roles
NGO projects can involve children, vulnerable people, healthcare, counselling or other sensitive activities. These roles may require appropriate qualifications, background checks, safeguarding procedures and professional supervision.
Short-term volunteers should not replace qualified local staff or undertake professional responsibilities beyond their training and legal authorisation.
