About Santa Teresa Lifeguards
Santa Teresa Lifeguards are trained and dedicated to providing safety to those who enjoy the beaches of Santa Teresa, Costa Rica. The organization was established in 2015 as a community response to tragic incidents resulting in drowning deaths. Today, Santa Teresa is an important tourist and surfing destination, and the lifeguards face the responsibility of keeping the beaches safe.
History
In 2015, following three tragic incidents, a group of foreign lifeguards, led by Matรญas Etchenique, organized beach patrols during peak tourist seasons. With Easter approaching rapidly, Thomas Richie, a beloved member of the community, took the initiative to construct four lifeguard towers strategically positioned along the coast. In May 2015, an Aquatic Rescue Course, instructed by the International Red Cross, certified the knowledge of 15 local lifeguards, strengthening the program with skilled personnel.
Thanks to the generosity of supporters, the dream of having a headquarters with the capacity to accommodate up to 12 volunteer lifeguards has been realized.
Santa Teresa Lifeguard Volunteer exchange
Through their voluntary exchange program, Santa Teresa Lifeguards have welcomed over 60 volunteers from various parts of the world. These dedicated individuals, hailing from the USA, Argentina, Italy, Spain, South Africa, Portugal, Brazil, France, England, and New Zealand, have provided guard services for numerous hours and in various tower locations.
The organization warmly invite all lifeguards interested in joining their team to contribute their time and experience to enhance the program and ensure the safety of the sea. They hope to receive the ongoing support of the local government to sustain operations and offer paid positions in the future. Currently, the organization remains self-financed through generated funds and community cooperation.
