Explore volunteer lifeguard opportunities where qualified participants support water safety, surveillance and emergency response at beaches, pools or other aquatic environments.
These are specialist roles rather than general beach volunteering. Hosts may require current lifeguard certification, strong swimming ability, previous rescue experience and training appropriate to the specific environment.
What does a lifeguard do? 🛟
A lifeguard monitors people in and around water, helps prevent aquatic emergencies and responds when someone is in difficulty. The role can involve surveillance, water rescue, first aid, resuscitation and coordinated emergency response.
Qualifications and water safety
Lifeguarding requires practical training and demonstrated rescue skills. Certification systems vary between countries and facilities, so check exactly which qualification the host recognises and whether additional beach, open-water, pool or rescue experience is required.
Confirm that your certification remains valid for the dates of the placement and ask about rescue equipment, emergency procedures, supervision, insurance and local working conditions. Beach lifeguarding can involve currents, waves, changing weather and other hazards that differ considerably from pool environments.
