Explore volunteer opportunities where chemistry is genuinely relevant to teaching, scientific education, laboratory activities, research or another clearly described role.
Opportunities in this field may require very different levels of knowledge. Some involve helping students learn basic science, while laboratory or research roles may require formal education, technical skills or previous experience.
What is chemistry? ⚗️🧪
Chemistry is the science concerned with substances, their composition and properties, and the changes they undergo through chemical reactions. It connects with many other fields, including biology, medicine, environmental science, agriculture and materials science.
Teaching and laboratory safety
If a role involves experiments or laboratory work, ask which substances and equipment volunteers will handle, what training and protective equipment are provided and who supervises the activities. Volunteers should not carry out unfamiliar procedures or handle hazardous chemicals without appropriate instruction and oversight.
For opportunities involving schools or children, also confirm the volunteer’s role, supervision and safeguarding procedures. Subject knowledge alone does not qualify someone to take independent responsibility for students.
