Science 🔬⚗️
Explore science volunteer opportunities abroad involving scientific research, fieldwork, environmental monitoring, citizen science, science education and other projects where scientific knowledge or methods play an important role.
Opportunities may be found in marine conservation, wildlife research, environmental organisations, educational projects, field stations and research centres. Some welcome interested beginners, while others require specific qualifications, technical experience or training.
What is science volunteering? 🔬
Science volunteering involves contributing to activities connected with scientific observation, experiments, data collection, analysis, research or science education. It can include laboratory assistance, ecological surveys, wildlife monitoring, citizen science and structured STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) educational activities.
Science research, fieldwork and education
Science volunteering can involve very different responsibilities. Some volunteers assist researchers by recording observations, collecting environmental data or helping with field surveys. Others support science workshops, educational demonstrations or practical learning activities.
Not every environmental or educational project involves scientific work. If you are specifically interested in science, check which activities are actually available, what methods are used and whether the host provides appropriate guidance.
Specialised laboratory procedures, biological sampling, wildlife handling and other technical activities may require professional supervision, training, safety equipment or permits. Projects involving children should also have suitable safeguarding and supervision procedures.
How to use this page
Check each listing’s publication date and confirm current activities, required qualifications, supervision, working hours, days off, accommodation, meals, minimum stay and any fees or other costs directly with the host.
For research placements, ask how volunteers are trained, what scientific methods are used and how collected data contributes to the project. Check relevant insurance, visa and legal requirements before travelling.
