Depending on the programme, volunteers may work with basic numeracy or subjects such as arithmetic, algebra, geometry and statistics. Some roles require experienced teachers, while others involve supporting local educators or helping individual learners with their studies.
What is mathematics? ➗
Mathematics is the study of numbers, quantities, shapes, patterns, structures and relationships. It includes areas such as arithmetic, algebra, geometry, statistics and calculus, as well as practical numeracy used in everyday life.
Teaching and tutoring mathematics
Before joining a project, ask which age groups and mathematics levels are involved, which curriculum or learning materials are used and whether you will teach independently, tutor individual learners or assist a local teacher. More advanced classes may require specific subject knowledge or teaching experience.
When activities involve children or teenagers, check supervision, safeguarding procedures, role boundaries and any background checks or qualifications required. Volunteers should work within the educational structure established by the school or organisation. You can also read Voluntouring.org’s guidance on volunteering with children.
