Learn more about the Peruvian night monkey

The animal in the photo is a Peruvian night monkey, also called an owl monkey because of its big round eyes.

  • Its scientific name is Aotus miconax.

It lives in the forests of northern Peru, where it spends the day hiding in tree holes or dense leaves and becomes active at night. The large eyes help it see in low light while it moves and searches for food. Night monkeys eat mainly fruit, leaves, flowers and some insects. They live high in the trees in small family groups, usually a pair of adults with their young. Both parents help to care for the baby, which spends much of its time riding on the adult’s back.

These monkeys rarely come down to the ground, so protecting healthy forests is very important for their survival.

The Peruvian night monkey is considered an Endangered species because much of its habitat has been cut down for farming, roads and towns. Conservation groups in Peru work with local communities to protect the remaining forest and to study the monkeys so that people can understand their needs better. You can read more scientific and conservation information on the Peruvian night monkey page on Wikipedia and on the IUCN Red List assessment.
