Teaching English with songs: a simple gift that can keep helping after you leave

Do you want to make a lasting impact when you volunteer as an English teacher? One practical way is to leave behind simple teaching materials that local teachers can continue using long after your stay.

In schools with limited resources, where computers, projectors or even electricity may not always be available, songs can become a very useful teaching tool. A few Universal Serial Bus (USB) flash drives with audio files, together with a couple of small rechargeable Bluetooth speakers, can make a real difference.

Many teachers have access to a smartphone, and Bluetooth technology does not require wireless fidelity (Wi-Fi) or an internet connection. This means that songs can be played in class even in places where online resources are difficult to use.

A low-cost idea with long-term value

You can simply write the lyrics on the board. But if you are willing to spend a little more, a basic laminating machine can help you create durable lyric sheets that teachers can use again and again.

I brought around 30 copies of two double-page Portable Document Format (PDF) documents, containing lyrics to about 20 songs. Once laminated, the copies became stronger, cleaner and easier to reuse in class. Teachers could distribute them to students while playing the songs, making the activity more interactive and enjoyable.

This turned out to be a very popular contribution at the school where I volunteered. The materials were simple, but they were practical, easy to understand and made to last.

What to bring

A few USB flash drives with songs, two rechargeable Bluetooth speakers, printed lyric sheets and, if possible, a simple laminating machine.

Why it works

Songs help students practise pronunciation, listening, vocabulary and grammar in a natural and memorable way.

Why it lasts

Laminated lyrics can be reused by teachers in many classes, helping the school benefit from your contribution over time.

Songs for different levels

The songs in this small collection were chosen because they contain useful vocabulary and grammar structures for English learners. Teachers can use them for listening practice, pronunciation work, gap-fill activities, vocabulary revision or simple sing-along lessons.

Some songs in the collection, especially numbers 23 to 31, do not include written lyrics. These can be useful for kindergarten or younger learners, where the focus may be more on rhythm, repetition, movement and simple listening.

Approximate material cost

The total cost was about 80 United States dollars (USD). Here is an example of what I spent:

Laminating machine
25 USD
100 laminating pouches
16 USD
2 small Bluetooth speakers
2 × 20 USD

This is a small, affordable idea, but it can leave teachers with something useful, reusable and enjoyable for their students. Have a look at the materials and watch the video for ideas on how to use songs in your English classes.
