Help and learn about earthbag construction (and more) in Romania 🇷🇴

Volunteer mixing clay at a natural building and earthbag home project in rural Romania, with handmade wooden interiors, round windows, forest surroundings and simple accommodation for volunteers.
Updated June 2026: the host has shared a new call for volunteers through our Facebook group. The current volunteer period runs until 15 September 2026. Please contact the host through the official project channels before making travel plans, as availability and conditions may change. The workshop form below is only for the 2026 events, not for volunteer applications.

We came across this updated call for volunteers through our Facebook group and thought it was worth refreshing this older listing. Născut din Țărână, meaning “Earth born”, is a natural building and forest living project in Romania, where Tudor is building his home using natural materials. It is a good fit for people interested in slow living, natural architecture, gardening, simple outdoor life and hands-on ecological work.

Natural building and garden volunteering in Romania

The project is based in a forest area near Ghindari, Romania 📍. The house is being built with natural materials and earthbag techniques, with the wider aim of creating a place connected to nature and, in the longer term, possibly moving towards an intentional community.

When help is needed

Current update: volunteers are welcome from now until 15 September 2026.

The host asks for a minimum stay of at least one week, although longer stays are preferred when possible.

What volunteers may help with

According to the latest update, the help needed may include both natural building work and garden work. Tasks may include thermal insulation using hemp, straw, reed, sunflowers, clay and lime plasters, waterproofing and planting a green roof, and helping with earthbag-related building work.

In the garden, volunteers may help with weeding, applying natural fertilisers and treatments, harvesting, and processing fruits and vegetables. Some previous experience is useful, especially in gardening or natural building, but it is not required. The host also welcomes people who are willing to learn, experiment and share practical ideas.

Useful experience

Some experience with gardening, natural materials, ecological building, green roofs, clay or lime plasters can be helpful. The host also mentions that experience with intentional communities would be especially valuable, as he is working towards that kind of long-term objective.

Food and accommodation

The host provides two plant-based meals. Accommodation depends on availability. A bed in the house may be possible, or volunteers may stay in a tent with an inflatable mattress. Inside and outside bathing options are available with river water.

This is a simple nature-based setting, so volunteers should be comfortable with basic living conditions, shared spaces and rural life close to the forest.

House rules

Smoking and alcohol intoxication are not allowed on the property.

About the project

Tudor’s project, Născut din Țărână, is about building a home in the forest with natural materials and learning through direct practice. The project combines natural architecture, food growing, simple living, and care for the surrounding environment.

Volunteers can learn about earthbag construction, natural insulation, clay and lime finishes, gardening, and the daily realities of creating a low-impact home in a rural Romanian landscape.

Original June 2026 update from the host

Hello, this is Tudor and I am writing you from Romania.

I have a project, “Născut din Țărână” (Earth born) where I build in a forest my home using natural materials. I was once an architect but I gave it up for a life in tune with nature. I invite volunteers from now until the 15 of September to help finish the building side of the project, or with the garden.

Activities may include thermal insulation using hemp, straw, reed, sunflowers, clay and lime plasters, waterproofing and populating a green roof, built with earth bags. Gardening may include weeding, applying natural fertilisers and treatments, harvesting, processing fruits and vegetables.

I request at least one week of stay but more is better. Two plant based meals will be provided. No smoking or alcohol intoxication is not allowed on the property. Depending on availability a bed in the house or a tent with inflatable mattress are possible options. Inside and outside baths are available with river water.

Some previous experience is useful, especially in the garden, but if you are willing to learn and experiment, it is even better. You can find out more on Născut din Țărână Facebook and Instagram pages, on the YouTube channel, and on the web page.

P.S. if you have any experience regarding intentional communities will be of great value to me since I am working toward such an objective.
