Some opportunities may be fair exchanges with no mandatory participant fee, while others may request a contribution or offer pocket money, a stipend or other forms of support. If money is requested or promised, confirm the exact conditions in writing before making a commitment.

Visas and volunteering in China
Chinese immigration rules distinguish between different purposes of travel. For example, an L visa is intended for tourism, an F visa can cover exchanges, visits and study tours, while a Z visa is intended for people working in China.
Do not assume that tourist entry, visa-free entry or an informal invitation from a host automatically permits teaching, paid employment or every type of volunteering or work exchange. Ask the host which immigration status applies to the proposed activities and verify it independently.

Teaching and other structured activities
Some listings in China involve English practice, tutoring, camps or educational activities. A language exchange and a formal teaching position are not necessarily treated in the same way, especially when regular duties or payment are involved.
If the opportunity resembles employment, ask for clear information about the organisation, duties, compensation and required work authorisation before travelling.
