What is reforestation? 🌳
Reforestation involves re-establishing forest cover in areas where trees have been lost or severely reduced. This can involve planting or seeding trees, while broader forest restoration may also include protecting natural regeneration, controlling invasive plants and caring for existing vegetation. Volunteering in reforestation projects
Volunteers may help collect seeds, prepare growing areas, raise seedlings, plant trees, mulch, water young plants or maintain restoration sites. Some projects also involve monitoring tree survival, managing invasive vegetation or protecting recovering woodland from grazing and other disturbances.
Before joining, ask which species are being planted, why they are suitable for the area and who will look after the trees in the following years. Restoring a forest involves more than a single planting day.
