Housekeeping
Explore housekeeping volunteering and work exchange opportunities in hostels, guesthouses, hotels, retreats, private homes and other accommodation projects.
Housekeeping can include preparing rooms, changing bed linen, laundry, tidying shared spaces, cleaning bathrooms or kitchens and helping keep accommodation organised for residents or guests. The exact responsibilities vary considerably between hosts.
Some listings may be seasonal, archival or no longer active. Always check the publication date and confirm the current activities and exchange conditions directly with the host before making travel plans.
What does housekeeping involve?
Housekeeping is broader than cleaning alone. Depending on the property, participants may help with:
- preparing bedrooms or dormitories;
- changing and washing bed linen and towels;
- laundry and organising clean linen;
- cleaning bathrooms, kitchens and communal spaces;
- making beds and preparing rooms for arrivals;
- keeping storage and shared areas organised;
- light household or accommodation maintenance.
The listing should explain exactly what is expected. โHousekeepingโ should not be used as a general label for unlimited cleaning or additional duties that were not agreed before arrival.
How to use this page
Open the opportunity that interests you and read the complete announcement. Look for the contact details at the end of the listing to find the host’s website, email address or application procedure.
Before applying, confirm the tasks, weekly hours, working times, days off, accommodation, meals, room arrangements, minimum stay and any fees, deposits or other financial conditions.
Some opportunities may be fair exchanges with no mandatory participant fee, while others may request a contribution or programme fee. If payment is required, ask for the exact amount, what it covers and the applicable payment, cancellation and refund conditions before making a commitment.
Voluntouring does not organise placements, select participants, arrange visas or mediate between volunteers and hosts. It does not process participant payments between travellers and host organisations. Publication on Voluntouring.org does not in itself constitute verification, endorsement or a recommendation of an opportunity.
Housekeeping exchange or regular employment?
Housekeeping is also a normal paid occupation in hotels, hostels and other accommodation businesses. Providing a bed or meals does not automatically make regular housekeeping work a legal volunteering arrangement.
Cleaning guest rooms, changing linen, preparing rooms for paying customers, doing regular laundry or covering fixed housekeeping shifts may be considered employment under local labour or immigration rules, even when no salary is paid.
Before travelling, check whether the proposed activities are permitted under your immigration status. Tourist or visitor entry does not automatically allow every form of unpaid hospitality work exchange.
For additional guidance, read Voluntouring’s information about safety and legality in volunteering and work exchanges and visas for volunteering abroad.
Safety and working conditions
Housekeeping can involve repetitive physical work, lifting mattresses or laundry, wet floors and regular use of cleaning products. Ask what equipment and protective measures are provided and how chemicals should be handled or stored.
If duties involve entering guest rooms or working alone, also ask about security procedures, handling personal belongings and what to do if an uncomfortable or unsafe situation occurs.
