Horse expedition 🐎🤠

Horse expedition volunteering opportunity and long-distance riding experience

Explore horse expedition volunteering opportunities involving long-distance riding, equestrian journeys, horse care, outdoor travel and practical support during multi-day expeditions.

Some opportunities involve joining an organised horseback journey, while others may look for experienced riders or helpers who can contribute to horse care, camp routines, logistics or preparation. Read each listing carefully to understand whether it is a volunteer exchange, a shared expedition or another type of participation.

Some listings may be seasonal, archival or no longer active. Always check the publication date and confirm the current route, dates, requirements and conditions directly with the organiser before making travel plans.

What is a horse expedition?

A horse expedition is generally a journey in which horses are used to travel across a route over one or more days. Expeditions may cross rural areas, mountains, forests, deserts or other landscapes and can involve overnight stays in camps, farms, guest accommodation or other locations along the route.

Conditions vary considerably. Some expeditions are recreational or cultural journeys, while others may involve farm work, research, environmental activities, traditional horsemanship or practical support for a longer travelling project.

Possible activities

Depending on the expedition, participants may help with:

  • feeding, watering and grooming horses;
  • saddling and preparing horses for travel;
  • checking tack and riding equipment;
  • setting up or maintaining camps;
  • preparing food and shared equipment;
  • navigation and route logistics;
  • loading or transporting equipment;
  • general horse care before and after each stage;
  • riding for several hours or kilometres per day.

The organiser should explain which activities are expected and what level of riding and horse-handling experience is required.

Riding experience and physical demands

Long-distance riding can be considerably more demanding than occasional recreational riding. Participants may spend several hours in the saddle, ride over uneven terrain and deal with changing weather or limited facilities.

Be accurate about your riding ability when applying. Experience in an arena does not automatically mean that someone is prepared for long days on trails, difficult terrain, river crossings, road riding or remote travel.

Ask about daily distances, terrain, expected pace, luggage arrangements, rest days and whether participants are expected to care for the horses after riding.

Horse welfare during expeditions

The welfare of the horses should remain central to any expedition. Ask how workloads are determined, how horses are rested and fed and what happens if an animal becomes injured, lame or unable to continue.

The route, pace and weight carried should be appropriate for the individual horses and local conditions. Access to water, suitable rest periods, hoof care and veterinary assistance should also be considered.

Participants should not be assigned horses that are unsuitable for their experience simply to keep an expedition moving.

How to use this page

Open the opportunity that interests you and read the complete announcement. Look for the contact details at the end of the listing to find the organiser’s website, email address or application procedure.

Before joining, confirm:

  • the route and expedition dates;
  • daily riding distances and terrain;
  • required riding and horse-handling experience;
  • the number and condition of the horses;
  • accommodation or camping arrangements;
  • meals and drinking-water arrangements;
  • equipment you must bring;
  • emergency and evacuation procedures;
  • insurance requirements;
  • any fees, deposits or other financial conditions.

Some opportunities may be fair exchanges with no mandatory participant fee, while others may request a contribution or programme fee. Some horse expeditions may instead operate as paid travel experiences rather than volunteering opportunities. Confirm exactly what type of arrangement is being offered before making a commitment.

If payment is required, ask for the exact amount, what it covers and the applicable payment, cancellation and refund conditions.

Voluntouring does not organise expeditions, select participants, arrange visas or mediate between travellers and organisers. It does not process participant payments between travellers and hosts. Publication on Voluntouring.org does not in itself constitute verification, endorsement or a recommendation of an expedition.

Safety and remote travel

Horse expeditions can involve falls, kicks, changing weather, remote terrain, road traffic, difficult navigation and limited access to medical assistance. Ask who is responsible for leading the route and what experience they have with the terrain and horses involved.

Confirm what riding helmet or other protective equipment is required and make sure your insurance covers horse riding, multi-day expeditions and any additional outdoor activities involved.

For remote journeys, also ask about communication equipment, emergency transport, first-aid arrangements and the possibility of leaving the expedition early if necessary.

Volunteer exchange or commercial expedition?

Some expeditions are informal shared journeys or community projects, while others are organised by commercial riding centres, tour operators or equestrian businesses.

If participants are expected to guide paying customers, care for commercial horses, prepare equipment or perform regular operational duties, local labour and immigration rules may apply even when accommodation or participation in the expedition is offered instead of a salary.

For additional guidance, read Voluntouring’s information about safety and legality in volunteering and work exchanges and visas for volunteering abroad.
