Natural horsemanship is a broad label used for different horse-training and handling approaches. Practices vary considerably between trainers and projects, so it is useful to ask how horses are actually handled and what volunteers are expected to do.
What is natural horsemanship? 🐎🌿
Natural horsemanship generally refers to approaches that use observation of horse behaviour, body language, timing, groundwork and consistent cues to develop communication between horse and handler. There is no single natural horsemanship system, and methods can differ substantially between practitioners. The word “natural” does not by itself guarantee that a particular technique is suitable or welfare-friendly for every horse.
Learning and working with horses
Activities can include feeding, grooming, leading, groundwork, observing behaviour, maintaining paddocks and equipment, assisting experienced handlers and, where appropriate, riding. Caring for horses, riding them and training them require different levels of knowledge and should not be treated as interchangeable skills.
Before participating in training activities, ask which methods are used, who provides instruction and what previous experience is expected. Volunteers should not independently train frightened, aggressive, unhandled or otherwise challenging horses without suitable experience and supervision.
Horse welfare and safety
Horse handling can involve kicks, bites, falls, crushing injuries and sudden movement. Follow the project’s safety instructions, use appropriate protective equipment and be accurate about your previous experience. If riding is included, check what riding equipment is required and whether your insurance covers the activity.
Veterinary treatment, dentistry, medication and other specialist procedures should remain with appropriately qualified and authorised professionals.
