What counts as gardening volunteering? 🌱
Gardening volunteering involves practical care of cultivated plants or growing areas. This can include vegetable plots, community gardens, household gardens, raised beds, orchards and other planted spaces. A project does not need to be a farm, but gardening should be a genuine part of what volunteers are expected to do.
Gardening, farming and permaculture
These activities often overlap but are not identical. Farm volunteering can include livestock, field crops and other agricultural work in addition to gardening. Permaculture refers to a broader design approach that may include gardens alongside water systems, soil management, perennial planting and other elements.
Gardening can range from a few hours helping with a household vegetable plot to regular productive work on a farm, nursery or commercial growing project. If duties involve fixed shifts, substantial production or work normally carried out by employees, check the applicable labour and immigration requirements.
