Volunteering opportunities in South Africa – At the southern tip of the African continent, South Africa is certainly one of the most extraordinary places in the world. Highlights include Johannesburg, Mandela’s city with the Apartheid Museum, and Cape Town, the legislative capital and third most populous city in the country. There will also be the opportunity to go on a safari in search of the Big Five (lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants and buffalo) in the Thornybush Private Reserve, which is part of the Kruger Park.

Volunteering in South Africa… for independent travellers!

Some of these opportunities are free (you receive free food and accommodation in exchange for voluntary work). Others require a daily/monthly contribution fee for food and accommodation. Remember that many areas in S. Africa are still developing and volunteering can’t always be a ‘free’ thing.

If you want to have an “impact” but only have a few weeks to volunteer abroad, then we recommend you to choose the non-free opportunities: you will contribute not only with your skills but also with your money, especially if you can only volunteer for a short period of time; this is usually better than paying for a “hotel” or a touristic village owned by foreign agencies.
