The Sri Aurobindo School of Kathmandu, Nepal (Sri Matri Aurobindo Vidyalaya), is currently looking for English-speaking volunteers to join as teachers during the 2025–2026 school year. The school is run entirely by volunteers and welcomes around 200 children, aged 4 to 17, from poor and rural areas across the country. The kids live at the school’s ashram, which provides them with meals, shelter, and education.

There’s no salary, no travel reimbursement – this is a non-paid volunteering position.

But the school offers something rare: a chance to live in a peaceful Himalayan setting while making a real impact. Volunteers receive a private room with an ensuite bathroom and organic vegetarian meals at no cost.

They’re especially in need of primary school teachers and high school math teachers, but volunteers for all subjects are welcome. The language of instruction is English, so good communication skills are essential.

Volunteers are asked to commit to one school term (about three months).

The school follows the principles of democratic education and Integral Yoga. It’s a simple place, grounded and focused on growth, both for the students and the volunteers who come from all over the world.

About Kathmandu

Kathmandu is the capital of Nepal.

It is set in a wide valley surrounded by hills and distant mountains. A place full of life: busy streets, old temples, cultures and traditions that go back centuries. At the same time, it’s a city with sharp contrasts. Some parts are modern and crowded, others are quiet and deeply rooted in spiritual life. Many families in and around Kathmandu still struggle with poverty, and access to good education isn’t always guaranteed. That’s why schools like Sri Aurobindo’s play such an important role, to offer not just learning, but a place to grow, live, and be cared for.
