No Name Kitchen (NNK) is an independent movement dedicated to supporting refugees and migrants along various routes, including the Balkans, Mediterranean, and Maghreb regions. Established in 2017 by volunteers who recognized the dire conditions faced by refugees in places like Belgrade, Serbia, NNK focuses on defending the freedom of movement through both humanitarian and political actions.
NNK provides essential services such as food distribution, basic necessities, and community spaces for people on the move. They operate in multiple locations, including Serbia, Bosnia, Italy, and Spain’s enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla. Beyond immediate aid, NNK is actively involved in documenting and reporting human rights abuses against migrants. For instance, they have reported incidents involving Croatian police allegedly burning migrants’ belongings during pushbacks.
In recent developments, NNK has gathered evidence of increased harassment of Syrian refugees at European borders following political changes in Syria. They reported that Bulgarian authorities have coerced Syrian asylum seekers into signing “voluntary return” documents, sometimes using threats and violence.
NNK’s approach emphasizes building relationships based on friendship and solidarity rather than charity, aiming to create a sense of community and support for those navigating challenging migration journeys.
